What does this number measure?
Eight studs on a brick that has become a universal reference. The 2 × 4 format uses a regular stud spacing. The reference gives its nominal length; actual dimensions include small tolerances needed for assembly.
Compare the stated dimensions
The comparison uses the number in each fact sheet: altitude, height, diameter, length or distance, depending on the reference. Two values in metres do not necessarily describe the same property.
Source and limitations
Catalogue order of magnitude; a source is provided, but this measurement has not been individually audited.
2 × 4 building brick with eight studs.
Patent for the modern interlocking system: 1958 patent. Proposed historical date; an existing documentary source is linked but was not consulted for this date in this session. Do not interpret this reference as the manufacturing date of the illustrated specimen. Milestone for the modern LEGO stud-and-tube system, not the manufacturing date of the illustrated brick or the first appearance of all construction bricks.
