What does this number measure?
In 1997, Cornell describes a 30 nm wide wire suspended over a 2 µm gap. This reference compares its width; the wire's length and supports are schematic.
Compare the stated dimensions
The comparison uses the number in each fact sheet: altitude, height, diameter, length or distance, depending on the reference. Two values in metres do not necessarily describe the same property.
Source and limitations
Representative or rounded dimensions according to the source; these are not a confidence interval.
An original interpreted scientific illustration, not a photograph. Width of the suspended wire alone, at mid-span. Only the width of the thin upper wire is calibrated to 30 nm. The supports and frame are illustrative; do not read their height as 30 nm. Their span and details are not verified secondary dimensions.
Documented construction or demonstration: 1997.
