What does this number measure?
A sheet of galaxies identified in redshift surveys. The sheet's major dimension is taken from the CfA survey page; the two secondary dimensions are not used for this measurement. The CfA page gives about 600 × 250 × 30 million light-years: this entry uses only 600 million as the largest extent. Other sources and historical conventions give about 500 to 760 million; this is not an exact length or a current record.
Compare the stated dimensions
The comparison uses the number in each fact sheet: altitude, height, diameter, length or distance, depending on the reference. Two values in metres do not necessarily describe the same property.
Source and limitations
The CfA page gives about 600 × 250 × 30 million light-years: this entry uses only 600 million as the largest extent. Other sources and historical conventions give about 500 to 760 million; this is not an exact length or a current record.
A generic artistic pattern shared with another entry in the same family; it represents neither a photograph nor an observed map of this structure. The galaxies and filaments are symbolic; only the stated extent follows the length scale factor.
