Tarantula Nebula: size, dimension and comparison

The adopted reference is about 600 light-years.

luminous complex ≈ 600 light-years, diffuse boundaries

A light-year is a distance: how far light travels in one year. It is used for distances between stars.

A vast star-forming region in the Large Magellanic Cloud.

What does this number measure?

A vast star-forming region in the Large Magellanic Cloud. The adopted extent approximately describes the bright central complex of 30 Doradus. Diffuse filaments and gas boundaries give other dimensions depending on the observed band; 600 light-years is a catalogue reference, not a sharp boundary.

Compare the stated dimensions

The comparison uses the number in each fact sheet: altitude, height, diameter, length or distance, depending on the reference. Two values in metres do not necessarily describe the same property.

Interpretive illustration of the Tarantula's bright complex; filaments and emission colours are interpreted, with diffuse boundaries. Neither a photograph nor an exact map of the gas.
