Ryugu · reference diameter: size, dimension and comparison

The adopted reference is about 900 m.

Approximate reference diameter ≈ 900 m

900 m = 0.9 km. A meter contains 100 centimeters, or 1,000 millimeters.

The asteroid of the Japanese Hayabusa2 mission.

What does this number measure?

The JAXA page gives an approximate size of 900 m, based on characterisation before the rendezvous. This rounded reference provides an order of magnitude; close-up observations subsequently refined the spinning-top shape and its different dimensions. The drawing's width is a diameter reference, not a survey of each boulder or a certified maximum axis.

Compare the stated dimensions

The comparison uses the number in each fact sheet: altitude, height, diameter, length or distance, depending on the reference. Two values in metres do not necessarily describe the same property.

Source and limitations

Preliminary reference rounded to approximately 900 m, explicitly retained as such. The body is not a sphere; mean diameter and maximum axes differ.

Interpretation of Ryugu's spinning-top shape. Calibrated documented horizontal diameter; silhouette, terrain and boulders are artistic, not derived from a geodetic model.
