Intel 8086: bare die size and comparison

The adopted reference is about 6 mm.

longer side of the die ≈ 6 mm

6 mm = 0.6 cm. A millimeter is one tenth of a centimeter.

1978Commercial release

In 1978, a new family of processors paves the way for the x86 world.

What does this number measure?

The bare Intel 8086 die measures about 6 × 5.5 mm. We compare its longer side. A newer die can be larger while containing more transistors: shrinking fabrication features does not require the processor's total area to shrink.

Compare the stated dimensions

The comparison uses the number in each fact sheet: altitude, height, diameter, length or distance, depending on the reference. Two values in metres do not necessarily describe the same property.
