Sedna’s orbit: size, dimension and comparison

The adopted reference is about 1.496E11 km.

major axis of the trajectory ≈ 1 000 AU; estimate

149.6 billion km ≈ 149,600 million km. One billion kilometers is 1,000 million kilometers.

A highly elongated path in the distant Solar System.

Sedna’s orbit, interpreted illustration
Interpreted illustration · dimension stated in the fact sheet.

What does this number measure?

The major axis is the complete length of the orbital ellipse, about twice its semi-major axis. The Sun is at one focus, not at the centre. Sedna's orbital elements and rounded values evolve with observations; this reference is not Sedna's current distance from the Sun. The drawing is a simplified projection.

Compare the stated dimensions

The comparison uses the number in each fact sheet: altitude, height, diameter, length or distance, depending on the reference. Two values in metres do not necessarily describe the same property.

Source and limitations

Proposed documented order of magnitude; source linked, not individually audited during this session. Model regions and boundaries are highly uncertain.

Sedna's orbit: the horizontal major axis of a very eccentric model ellipse, with the Sun at one focus. Rounded eccentricity and simplified projection; the small dot is an out-of-scale marker and does not show a current position. The catalogue's major axis remains an estimate.
