Cornell walking microrobot: size, dimension and comparison

The adopted reference is about 70 µm.

body length of this variant ≈ 70 µm

70 µm = 0.07 mm. A micron (µm) is a millimeter divided by 1,000.

2020Documented construction or demonstration

How Big

What does this number measure?

The Cornell paper describes bodies of 40 × 40 µm or 40 × 70 µm, depending on the variant, with a maximum thickness of 5 µm. This reference compares the body length of the 70 µm variant, excluding its legs. Four very thin metal actuators enable walking under external laser illumination; this is not an autonomous general-purpose robot.

Compare the stated dimensions

The comparison uses the number in each fact sheet: altitude, height, diameter, length or distance, depending on the reference. Two values in metres do not necessarily describe the same property.

Source and limitations

Variant with a 70 µm body; legs excluded from the measurement. The drawing's secondary proportions, pose and materials are interpreted, without an exact three-dimensional reconstruction.

Original interpreted scientific illustration, not a photograph. Length of this variant's rigid body, excluding the legs. The 70 µm body length excludes the four legs. Pose, texture and secondary proportions are interpreted.

Documented construction or demonstration: 2020.
