SpaceX Dragon · capsule and trunk: size, dimension and comparison

The adopted reference is about 8.1 m.

Total height ≈ 8.1 m · capsule + trunk

8.1 m = 810 cm. A meter contains 100 centimeters, or 1,000 millimeters.

What does this number measure?

The Canadian Space Agency describes the crewed Dragon as 8.1 m high and 4 m in diameter. The vehicle consists of the pressurized capsule and the unpressurized rear module, called the trunk. The height compared includes these two assembled parts; it is neither the height of the crew compartment alone nor that of the Falcon 9 rocket. The trunk carries the solar panels and is separated before the capsule returns. The illustration shows this assembly upright, excluding the launcher, ground installation and deployed parachutes. The volume accessible to astronauts cannot be inferred from an 8.1 m by 4 m cylinder: the shape, equipment and unpressurized module occupy part of that space.

Compare the stated dimensions

The comparison uses the number in each fact sheet: altitude, height, diameter, length or distance, depending on the reference. Two values in metres do not necessarily describe the same property.

Source and limitations

Rounded documented dimensions. The 8.1 m includes the unpressurized trunk; it measures neither the crew compartment alone nor the launch vehicle. Appendages and illustration details are not dimensioned individually.
